Year 1

Welcome to Year 1!

In Year 1 you will find Miss Bemmer (Year Leader and 1 Milne Teacher), Miss Callis (1 Ahlberg Teacher), Mrs Sharma and Mrs Dungarwalla (1 McKee Teachers). As well as Mrs Haines, Mrs Ko and Mrs Sandu who support across the year group. Mrs Parmley is the Vice Principal.

This year your child will start to follow the National Curriculum. Across the year, we will be studying 6 different topics in our Project Based Learning lessons - Percy the Park Keeper, All about the UK, Explorers, Fire Fire!, Exploring Art with Katie and we finish the year taking part in a whole school project. This is an exciting way to cover the more traditional subjects of Art, History and Geography (to name a few).

In June, Year 1 children take a phonic screening test. They will be doing daily phonic lessons throughout the year to teach them to read and support them with this test. It is vital that parents support their children with their learning and home and we welcome any questions that parents might have with this. Phonic Club on Tuesday mornings welcomes all in Year 1 so bring your child along at 8:15am.

Year 1 is an exciting time as the children become familiar with a more formal way of learning. This is a time when we celebrate their learning with a lot of different experiences from day trips to celebratory events in school. At the end of the year, we want each Year 1 child to be ready to move on into Year 2 prepared for the exciting challenges that await them there.
