Junior Duke

What is the Junior Duke Award?
Junior Duke is an award scheme inspired by the Duke of Edinburgh Award and aimed at primary children that encourages the development of valuable life skills. There are seven levels:
-
Nano Duke (Nursery)
-
Micro Duke (Reception)
-
Silver Mini Duke (Year 1)
-
Gold Mini Duke (Year 2)
-
Bronze Junior Duke (Year 3)
-
Silver Junior Duke (Year 4)
-
Gold Junior Duke (Year 5)
-
Platinum Junior Duke (Year 6)
What experiences are children involved in?
Each level contains 14 challenges (except Nano & Micro, which contain 10). To complete a level, children need to successfully finish ten of these challenges (seven for Nano & Micro).
Challenges include mastering skills such as first aid, ICT, art, drama, music, sport, and cookery, among a variety of other experiences. Children will complete these challenges outside of school with help from friends and family. Some challenges will also be offered in school to all children.
The Online Platform
To track their progress, children complete their challenges on the online platform, for which they receive a login when they sign up. For each task, they are required to:
-
Upload evidence (such as photographs or videos of the activity).
-
Submit a write-up reflecting on what they learned and how they tackled the challenge.
How does the Junior Duke benefit our children?
The skills gained through the Junior Duke are invaluable, empowering our children to thrive both during their time with us and in the world beyond our school gates. Children gain confidence, independence, resilience, and adaptability when embarking on the challenges within each level.
By taking part, they become better equipped to deal with everyday challenges. Children love to do things without help; they simply need the time and space to explore and learn from their mistakes.
Completing the Awards
Once the required number of challenges have been submitted online and reviewed, the level is considered complete.
-
Assessment: Upon completion of a challenge, the "Duke Leader" will review the digital evidence and write-up to sign it off.
-
Recognition: Upon completing a full level, a certificate and a badge are awarded during our Values Assembly each term. Parents will be invited to celebrate with their child.
