PSHE

Intent

At Western House Academy, our intention in PSHE is to ensure pupils leave our school with the knowledge, understanding and emotional maturity to lead positive, successful lives in today’s diverse society. We aim for all children to develop high aspirations, strong self-belief and the confidence to know that anything is possible.

Values

Our PSHE curriculum is built on our core values of respect, friendship, honesty, teamwork, courage, curiosity, ambition, resilience, tolerance and positivity. These values guide pupils to make thoughtful choices and build positive  relationships within and beyond school.

Knowledge

We build pupils’ knowledge progressively from the Early Years to Year 6, helping them understand key aspects of health, relationships, safety and citizenship. Through engaging, relevant learning experiences, pupils gain the confidence and skills needed for life in the modern world.

Equality

Equality and inclusion are at the heart of our curriculum. We celebrate diversity and teach pupils to value and respect others, regardless of gender, religion, age, disability, ethnicity or sexuality. Pupils learn to recognise and challenge unfairness, developing empathy and social responsibility.

Experience

Experiential learning enriches our PSHE provision, giving pupils real opportunities to apply their learning in school and the wider community. These experiences build confidence, resilience and a strong sense of moral and social  responsibility.

Implementation

At WHA, PSHE is taught weekly across the school following the Jigsaw Programme, which provides a progressive and spiral curriculum covering all aspects of Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education, including statutory Relationships and Health Education, SMSC and British Values. Each half term, all pupils study the same theme to ensure whole-school consistency and progression. The learning themes are:

Autumn 1: Being Me in My World
Autumn 2: Celebrating Differences
Spring 1: Dreams and Goals
Spring 2: Healthy Me
Summer 1: Relationships
Summer 2: Changing Me

In the Early Years Foundation Stage, PSHE is taught throughout our provision and we have weekly Jigsaw lessons. At the end of EYFS, we measure the progress the children have made by assessing their personal, social and emotional development focussing on self regulation, self management and building relationships.

In Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2, PSHE is taught through the Jigsaw Scheme, which focuses on emotional literacy, resilience and mindfulness. Pupils learn how to build healthy relationships, manage change and maintain physical and mental well-being. Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) is delivered in an age-appropriate way, ensuring children understand and respect the diversity of modern Britain.

Impact

Our PSHE curriculum is age appropriate and progressive across all year groups. It equips pupils with the confidence, empathy and understanding to make informed decisions and to play a positive role within society.

By the time pupils leave WHA, they are able to manage their emotions, maintain positive relationships, show respect for diversity and understand the importance of mental and physical well-being. They are confident, kind and responsible individuals who are well-prepared for the next stage of their education and life in modern Britain.
