Sustainability

Western House Academy is committed to embedding sustainability as a strategic imperative to address the 21st-century environmental challenges we all face. We cultivate ‘resource mindfulness’ in our students by teaching sustainability themes across the curriculum, particularly in science, emphasizing the core principles of "reduce, reuse, recycle". Children and staff are encouraged to make informed daily choices, such as switching off lights and conserving water. Our student-led Eco Green Team drives forward our sustainability efforts by collecting recycling, picking litter and weighing food waste. We compost green waste from the kitchen and playground and collect rainwater, using it to grow fruit and vegetables in our home-made compost. Involving children in this growing, harvesting, and composting cycle demonstrates the powerful, accessible impact of sustainability. Our commitment also involves robust active governance via a comprehensive Climate Action Plan (CAP), where our stakeholders lead initiatives across four critical pillars: Decarbonisation and Energy Efficiency, Climate Adaptation and Resilience, Biodiversity and Green Infrastructure, and Climate Education, Green Skills, and Green Careers. This strategic framework entails promoting initiatives such as greener commuting in Cycle to School Week and expanding our local impact by partnering with a local allotment to grow additional produce. Overall, Western House Academy aims to ensure that our students and staff learn to make life-long informed decisions that promote positive, systemic change for both our local environment and the global ecosystem.

Western House continues to deepen links with our local community. Last academic year, our Year 6 children produced designs, 3D models and presentations to transform an area of overgrown wasteland into a multisensory and inclusive community garden linked to sustainability principles and to provide a space where local wildlife can be observed thriving.

Working closely with Slough Borough Council, the development of this space is now underway with a target completion date of early spring 2026.
