Hatching Wonders: Nursery's Chick Experience 🐣

The arrival of ten eggs from Living Eggs is a highly anticipated event that forms a delightful and enriching part of our Nursery program. This incredible hands-on project offers students a unique, front-row seat to the miracle of life, providing countless opportunities for learning and development.

The experience always begins with the exciting task of setting up the incubator and the subsequent period of patient waiting. After a few days, the excitement builds as small cracks appear in the shells, leading to the thrilling moment when the chicks hatch. The children are always delighted to witness this event, and the joy on their faces as they see new life emerge is truly magical.

Over the next week and a half, the students have the immense pleasure of observing the chicks as they grow stronger and increase in size. This observation period is followed by an even more rewarding step: holding and petting the chicks. The children consistently show great pride and care, demonstrating wonderful bravery as they interact with the fluffy new additions.

The entire process serves as a powerful catalyst for the children's language development. The constant changes and activities create countless opportunities for communication, as students eagerly ask questions, make comments about the changes they see, and retell stories about the chicks' antics in their brooder.

Beyond language, the experience instills the crucial importance of animal care. The children learn firsthand about responsibility, including the need to keep the chicks clean, fed, and watered every day to ensure they stay strong. Many students naturally make comparisons to their own pets at home, solidifying their understanding of what it means to care for a living creature.

Adding to the Adventure: The Annual Petting Zoo Visit 

To further enrich this experience and build on the children's learning, our Nursery students are also granted the special privilege of visiting the Petting Zoo at our annual Summer Fayre before the main event begins.

This exclusive access allows the children to interact with a wider variety of animals in a calm, controlled environment. They get to practice their developing skills in gentle interaction and care with creatures of different sizes and temperaments. This visit perfectly complements the chick-hatching project by broadening their exposure to the animal kingdom, reinforcing the lessons they've learned about responsibility, empathy, and respect for all living things. It’s always a delightful and memorable way to celebrate the end of their foundational year.
