School Council

On Monday 23rd June, the school councillors from Years 4, 5 and 6 were lucky enough to visit the Houses of Parliament.

We had a very early start - meeting at Burnham train station at 6.45am! We then took the Elizabeth Line and one tube to Westminster, where we then walked to Parliament. We had to go through airport-style security and listen to the rules about conduct in Parliament.

We then had a guided tour - even going into the House of Lords and the House of Commons, where we weren't allowed to sit on the benches as we aren't Lords or Baronesses! The tour guide was very informative and told us about the history of the building, as well as what happens on a day-to-day basis.

We had lunch, a walk to see some sites (Big Ben, the London Eye, Jubilee Gardens), an ice cream and then a walk back to the station to catch our train to school. We walked around 12,000 steps, so we definitely got our exercise for the day.

The children have written their own synopses of the day:

Samarah:
The trip to the houses of parliament was a great experience. Something the tour guide told us is that the king comes once every year to open the houses of  parliament. Another thing is that only one place in the houses of parliament did not burn down in the fire and when it got bombed.

Ahmad:
Our Parliament trip was a memorable experience. We first visited parliament, where we had a 105-minute guided tour of all the traditional and modern rooms of parliament. We learned a little bit about politics. For example, the House of Commons and the House of Lords. We left through Westminster Hall.
Did you know that Westminster Hall was one of the only parts of the old parliament that survived blitzes, fires and bombs? Afterwards, we crossed an enormous bridge to see the towering London Eye. We stopped for soft-serve ice before finally going back to school at 2:30 PM.
